The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church, is a Christian denomination that originated in the early 19th century in the United States. It is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has a worldwide membership of over 16 million people.
Foundation and Early History
The church was founded by Joseph Smith Jr. in 1830 in Fayette, New York. Smith claimed to have received a series of visions from God, including a vision in which he was visited by the angel Moroni. Moroni told Smith about a set of golden plates that were buried in a nearby hill. Smith retrieved the plates and translated them into English. The resulting book, known as the Book of Mormon, became the founding scripture of the church.
The early church faced significant persecution, and its members were forced to move several times. In 1844, Smith was killed by a mob in Carthage, Illinois. After Smith's death, Brigham Young led the church west to the Salt Lake Valley in present-day Utah.
